About Laveen Landscaping

A Laveen crew that knows what the dirt under your yard is doing.

Isaac and a small crew have been laying pavers, installing turf, and rebuilding desert yards in and around Laveen Village for about fifteen years.

Laveen is its own thing. The dirt under most front yards out here is heavy caliche over hardpan — paver bases want extra compaction, turf bases want a real subgrade, drip lines want pressure regulation because half the village is on a single line off the canal. We've spent fifteen years figuring out what works on this side of South Mountain and what doesn't.

We quote on the phone or in person. Estimates are free. The crew shows up when we say. The job gets walked with you before we leave.

Pavers, turf, gravel, plants. The yard you want, done right the first time.

Where we work — under South Mountain

Our zone runs from the South Mountain trailheads to the Estrella foothills.

Fifteen years working one corner of the Valley means we know which Laveen front yards have caliche eight inches down, which Cheatham streets sit lower in monsoon runoff, and which Estrella-foothills lots get the worst late-summer sun. Here is roughly where we run.

What we do — Laveen, AZ

Five things, done well on this side of the Valley.

Pavers and turf are the bulk of the work, with full landscape redesigns the rest. We don't pad the service list with things we don't actually do.

  • Pavers

Patios, walkways, driveways, pool decks. Compacted aggregate base, bedding sand, polymeric joints, edge restraint. Done the way a Laveen yard needs to handle monsoon runoff.

  • Artificial turf

Pet- and kid-friendly turf installs over a proper crushed-base subgrade, with cool-fill infill if you ask. We'll show you the seam and infill choices before we order.

  • Gravel & decomposed granite

DG paths, drive aprons, full front-yard xeriscape conversions. Weed barrier laid right, edging set, compacted to hold. Two-tone if you want it.

  • Landscaping & plants

Native and adapted desert plants — palo verde, mesquite, yucca, agave, lantana — set with sized drip emitters and a controller that handles AZ heat without flooding.

  • Hardscape — walls & fire pits

Block retaining walls, garden walls, pony walls, built-in fire pits. Footers right, courses level, capped clean. Stucco-finished or left raw — your call.

The Laveen front-yard decision

Turf or gravel? Here's the honest tradeoff.

Almost every Laveen front-yard call we get in 2026 boils down to one question: artificial turf or decomposed granite? Both work out here. The right pick depends on the kids, the dogs, the water bill you want, and what the yard is for.

Option A

Artificial turf

A proper turf install is a layer cake: native subgrade compacted flat, three to four inches of aggregate base compacted, a thin bedding-sand course, then the turf rolled out and seamed. Infill is what makes it feel like grass underfoot instead of carpet — we use a cool-fill option if you ask.

Best for

Backyards with kids and dogs. Front lawns where you want the green look without the bermuda+rye cycle and the water bill. Anywhere a real lawn would die from shade or drainage.

Option B

Decomposed granite + gravel

DG over a real weed barrier is the Phoenix xeriscape default for a reason. We grade the subgrade, lay woven weed-barrier fabric (not the cheap landscape fabric that tears in a year), drop the DG, compact it, and edge it so it doesn't migrate into the street the first time a monsoon hits.

Best for

Front-yard conversions where you want the desert look, low water, low maintenance. Side yards. Drive aprons. Anywhere kids and dogs aren't running on it daily.

Quick scorecard

  • Lowest water bill

    Turf
    Gravel

Gravel needs no water. Turf needs occasional rinse + cool-down spray.

  • Lower install cost

    Turf
    Gravel

DG is a fraction of a turf install per square foot.

  • Kid- and pet-friendly feel

    Turf
    Gravel

Turf wins big. Dogs prefer it. Kids actually use the yard.

  • Monsoon resilience

    Turf
    Gravel

A proper turf base drains. DG can migrate in heavy washout if the edging is light.

Still unsure? Call. We'll walk the yard with you and tell you what we'd do if it were ours — including the cases where neither option is the right pick and a real bermuda+rye overseed lawn is the answer.
